AdGrowth Weekly | Issue No. 3

AdGrowth Weekly

July 17, 2025

Yes, we’re still here, and yes, it’s still summer.

Some people thought we wouldn’t get the third issue of AdGrowth Weekly out this week, what with a post-holiday hangover, a few events on the calendar, and that general mid-July haze, but here we are, still going strong. Welcome back.

Since I started working (yes, in the '90s - no comments, please), I’ve noticed that the summer is deceptively tricky. Your inbox fills with OOO replies, and nobody has time to meet, while people that are actually working are going 120 MPH and expect responses immediately. This is also the time we all balance the “what happened in the first half” questions with the “what’s the updated strategy for the rest of the year” planning. All while the day-to-day business requirements keep coming.

These day-to-day requirements are what we’re going to focus on through the next few weeks. What is going on now that you can take advantage of before things get hectic again heading into the fall? Seeing as this is typically a slower time of year, there is a lot happening in the advertising world. We’ll keep you updated.

Stay cool, and we’ll see you next week.

NAB Pushes Back on NextGen TV Mandate

The National Association of Broadcasters, led by CLO Rick Kaplan, is pressing the FCC to phase out the ATSC 1.0 broadcast standard by 2028 in major markets (and fully by 2030) to accelerate the rollout of ATSC 3.0, also known as NextGen TV. Insisting that the current simulcast model stifles innovation, Kaplan accused critics, primarily the CTA and NCTA, of "protecting their turf" under the guise of consumer protection.

CNN Revamps FAST Strategy: Brad Smith Named Anchor for CNN Headlines

CNN is doubling down on its FAST efforts with the relaunch of CNN Headlines, now featuring live original programming, including the brand-new morning show CNN Headline Express. As part of this strategic push, former Yahoo Finance and Cheddar anchor Brad Smith will join the channel later this summer from Atlanta, bringing expertise in business, culture, and politics to the fast-paced format and helping CNN attract new advertisers. News continues to be essential for performance advertisers, and CNN reentering the FAST arena could be a great opportunity to efficiently scale campaigns.

Fox News Climbs to No. 2 in Weekday Q2 Ratings; Only CBS Leads

Fox News advanced to the second-highest position in weekday viewership for Q2 2025, surpassing both ABC and NBC with an average of 3 million daily viewers. CBS retained the top spot with 3.42 million viewers, driven by a consistent slate of high-performing programs. Fox also outperformed its cable news competitors by a wide margin, with MSNBC drawing 1.27 million viewers and CNN falling behind at 559,000. The network’s strong showing was fueled by high-profile news coverage and exclusive interviews that resonated with its core audience.

The Shuffle: LA’s DTC Rummikub Social

What a night! Last Thursday, we hosted our first official Rummikub happy hour, and it’s one for the books. The evening was full of great conversation, competitive gameplay (thanks to our friends at RummiKlub), and incredible company, all set at the beautiful Kasbah Members Club in West Hollywood.

A huge thank you to all the brands, partners, and industry friends who came out and made the night one to remember. I may have gone 0-for-3, but who knew losing could be this fun? We’re already planning the next one… And trust us, you won’t want to miss it!
