FOOTBALL, BIG MERGERS & LIVE ADVERTISING TAKE CENTER STAGE

AdGROWTH WEEKLY

August 13, 2026

Football season is getting close, and you can already feel the excitement picking up across the media world.

NFL planning is kicking into high gear, ESPN is preparing for its biggest football season yet, and live sports continue to become one of the most interesting places for brands looking for their next growth channel.

And it’s not stopping with the NFL.

Netflix is already seeing major advertiser demand around the Women’s World Cup well before the first match is played.

But somehow, that’s not even the wildest thing in this week’s newsletter.

Netflix put a man inside a billboard above Sunset Boulevard, Nielsen is spending $2.15 billion to acquire DoubleVerify, and Tubi is working to give advertisers a better look at exactly what content their CTV ads are running alongside.

Sports, streaming, measurement, and a guy living above Sunset Boulevard. Pretty good week in advertising.

Let’s get into it.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

The Women's World Cup Fuels Netflix's Upfront

Interest in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is building well ahead of the tournament, with Netflix reporting that all presenting sponsorships have sold out and nearly all in-game advertising inventory has already been committed as part of its 2026 U.S. upfront. The early demand comes after Netflix secured the exclusive U.S. rights to the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups, marking the company's first major global football property. Netflix also announced that its 2026 U.S. upfront nearly doubled advertising commitments compared with last year, driven by strong demand for live programming, premium video, and sports. The Women’s World Cup inventory was included alongside Netflix’s broader advertising offerings, making the tournament one of the platform’s earliest large-scale live sports opportunities for advertisers.

Measurement's Biggest Deal Yet

Nielsen has agreed to acquire digital advertising measurement company DoubleVerify in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.15 billion. Under the agreement, DoubleVerify shareholders will receive $13.60 per share, a 30% premium over the company's 60-day volume-weighted average share price. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. DoubleVerify will continue operating under its existing brand and management team, providing advertisers with measurement across CTV, digital video, display, social media, and open web advertising, including services such as viewability, fraud detection, brand suitability, and campaign verification.

How Tubi Is Improving CTV Advertising

Tubi Media Group has signed a new agreement with Gracenote to expand content discovery across Tubi and FOX One. The partnership will integrate Gracenote's entertainment metadata, imagery, and content IDs to improve search, recommendations, and navigation across both platforms. The companies also plan to incorporate Gracenote IDs into programmatic CTV bid requests, giving advertisers and buyers more content-level transparency during campaign execution. Gracenote's database spans more than 55 million entertainment listings, 80,000 channels and catalogs, 70+ languages, and 80+ countries, providing the metadata infrastructure behind content discovery across streaming services worldwide.

INDUSTRY TRENDS

The Billboard That Came to Life

Netflix is pushing experiential marketing to the forefront to support its new thriller The Last House, transforming a billboard above Sunset Boulevard into a fully functional living space where a performer remained for 72 hours. Designed to mirror the film's central premise, the activation quickly drew attention from pedestrians, local television stations, entertainment publications, and social media, extending the campaign well beyond the billboard itself. The stunt reflects a broader strategy of using high-impact, real-world experiences to generate conversation around new releases, as streaming platforms increasingly look beyond traditional advertising to capture attention, build awareness, and keep new titles at the center of the conversation.

ESPN's Biggest NFL Season Yet

With the NFL season approaching, ESPN has launched a new "Football's On" marketing campaign featuring comedian and football fan Stavros "Stavvy" Halkias. The campaign highlights the network's year-round football coverage, including live NFL games, studio programming, digital content, and streaming across ESPN's platforms. It debuted during Pro Football Hall of Fame Weekend and serves as the first major marketing push ahead of ESPN's inaugural broadcast of Super Bowl LXI, marking the first time the network will televise the NFL's championship game. The campaign will run across television, streaming, digital, social media, audio, and out-of-home advertising throughout the season, supporting ESPN's NFL coverage from kickoff through the Super Bowl.
